WHAT IS FUNERARY AROMATHERAPY?
Funerary Aromatherapy is a term I came up with to describe the art of working with aromatherapy and essential oils specifically to help bring comfort and support to the experiences of dying, death and grief.
Since ancient times, plants and their scents have played a role in the processes of dying, death and grief including important parts in funerary rites. For practical and physical reasons (think mummification or to help cover up the smell of decomposition), for emotional reasons (imagine a flower to bring solace to a grieving heart) and for spiritual reasons (like for assisting an individual’s soul in making it to the afterlife safely), plants have been there and they have a lot to offer us in the funerary process still today if we choose to incorporate them. Using aromatherapy and essential oil diffusion is an effective and easy way to do so.
HOW CAN FUNERARY AROMATHERAPY DIFFUSER BLENDS BE USED IN END OF LIFE (PALLIATIVE) SETTINGS?
Essential oils can be used in many ways to support the palliative individuals themselves, their loved ones and those involved in their care and support.
~ For helping to alleviate stress, anxiety and depression.
~ To aromatically and energetically freshen up a room or space.
~ To help facilitate a more pleasant, open and calm experience for everyone and foster better communication.
~ To help allow memories to surface and be brought closure.
~ To help with the energetic and spiritual changes encountered throughout the palliative experience.
~ To help provide extra comfort and support to the individual and their loved ones throughout the process.
HOW CAN FUNERARY AROMATHERAPY DIFFUSER BLENDS BE USED DURING THE DYING AND DEATH PROCESSES?
The dying process is a unique experience for everyone and no two people's deaths will be the same, but there are certain markers that seem to leave people with a sense that a death was a "good" death and using essential oils may present us with another way to contribute to that experience.
~ To help soothe the anxiety and stress of the dying and the living loved ones.
~ To help facilitate the spiritual and energetic aspects of dying for the individual.
~ To help with the emotional aspect of anticipatory grief that can often proceed the death for both the dying and loved ones.
~ To help facilitate the easy transition of the soul (the energy) out of the body.
~ To help provide extra comfort and support to the individual and their loved ones throughout the process.
~ To create or add to spiritual rituals or ceremonies for the dying and for the dead (including memorials, funerals, etc).
HOW CAN FUNERARY AROMATHERAPY DIFFUSER BLENDS BE USED FOR FUNERARY AND MEMORIAL PURPOSES?
With the close link between scent and memory, we can employ special and familiar scents for the purposes of bringing comfort, joy, conversation, memories and healing to our memorial and funerary practices and rituals.
~ To help facilitate and foster positive memories and associations of the one who has died during their funerals and memorials.
~ To help honour and memorialize the loves, interests, and personality of the one who has died.
~ To help foster and facilitate connections, support, conversations and healing of participants during the memorials and funerary services.
~ To aromatically and energetically freshen up the memorial or funeral space.
HOW CAN FUNERARY AROMATHERAPY DIFFUSER BLENDS BE USED FOR GRIEF SUPPORT?
Grief is one of the hardest earthly experiences that we ever have to go through. It is called grief “work" for a reason and there is no way around it except for through it, but essential oils can provide us with an aid to doing so. At those times when we may feel like we just cannot do it on our own, essential oils can help support us through those moments.
~ To help with the spiritual and energetic experiences of grief which can be difficult to externalize.
~ To help cope with the depression, anxiety, sadness, anger or fear that can accompany grief.
~ To help overcome the pain and debility of grief.
~ To help remember loved ones with love, peace and joy.
~ To help foster spiritual and intuitive ability and calm to connect and communicate with loved ones.
~ To help encourage healing, motivation and opening up again after a grief experience.
~To help provide extra comfort and support throughout the grieving process.
